"The concept of calories in and calories out is definitely the backbone of weight reduction," explains Clinical Dietitian Bethany Doerfler, M.S., R.D.N. at Northwestern University. "However, metabolism and weight reduction are much more complicated than that."



So, before you jump on the CICO bandwagon, it's essential to grasp a few critical aspects of your metabolism and body's metabolism when it comes to dieting and weight reduction.



There is a good method to perform CICO and a technique that may cause problems.



It is critical to understand that calorie monitoring does not necessarily convert into long-term weight control. Worse, the approach may leave you feeling starved and (gasp) disordered eating.

What Exactly Is the CICO Diet?

"However, calories as we know them are so arbitrary," adds Langer. "The calorie was created a long time ago and isn't always true in terms of how our systems digest different foods. We're finding out a lot more about how calories are absorbed."



She adds that your body absorbs more calories from food that has been processed or broken down from its original state. "So, if you drink a smoothie, you're going to absorb a substantial percentage of those calories versus eating that meal raw or cooked," adds Langer.



According to new study, our systems react differently to ultra-processed foods like chips or Twinkies than to kale or bananas. "Those [packaged snacks] will be perceived quite differently on a cellular level," Doerfler adds.



According to 2019 study published in Cell Metabolism, the National Institute of Health discovered that ghrelin, a hormone that stimulates hunger, is greater after individuals consume ultra-processed meals than after eating a well-balanced diet.



According to Doerfler, highly processed meals rich in sugar, fat, and salt may increase insulin levels and lead your body to retain extra fat.

"Fiber-rich meals give a sense of satisfaction and fullness," Doerfler adds. The vitamin also supports healthy gut flora, which researchers think may influence a person's weight.



It, just because you're losing weight on CICO doesn't imply you're doing so in a healthy manner. If the remainder of your diet still contains a lot of junk food, but you're eating less of it, you may be losing weight but not improving your diet.



Is the CICO Diet Safe?

Counting calories isn't intrinsically difficult, according to Doerfler.

"I appreciate how this diet has brought back to the forefront the need of counting calories and understanding where your high-calorie food originates from," she adds. "Almost often, those calories are obtained from processed snack foods and sugar-sweetened drinks. The aim is that those calories would be utilised to eat more wisely and healthily."



Knowing that a morning bagel with cream cheese has more than 600 calories may encourage you to select a tasty breakfast with less calories, such as oatmeal and peanut butter.



In addition, applications like MyFitnessPal may help you keep track of what you're consuming. According to a February 2019 research published in the journal Obesity, those who spent only 15 minutes a day recording their meals dropped approximately 10% of their body weight in one month.



Counting calories, on the other hand, may seem like a chore, lead to compulsive behaviour, and even trigger binge eating, according to Langer.



"When everything is reduced to statistics, it takes away all the pleasure of eating and disconnects us from feeding our bodies," she claims. "By being punitive, this promotes diet culture."



For individuals suffering from eating disorders, stress about numbers may be a trigger for bingeing. Consult a dietician if you have a history of disordered eating so that you can create a plan that works for you.



Birthdays–or any other festive meal–are also excluded from rigid diets.



"People aren't nearly as robotic," Doerfler adds. "Even if someone requires 1,200 calories per day to lose weight, most individuals do not follow that 100% of the time."



Finally, the ideal diet is one that does not occupy all of your thoughts. Dieting becomes a problem when you refuse to eat even when you are hungry, according to Langer.



"If you needed to pee, you wouldn't reply, 'No, I won't be able to urinate for another three hours,'" she claims.



Langer advises paying attention to your body's natural hunger signals and adopting a more relaxed attitude.



"Stop judging food as good or terrible and simply consume," she advises.
